MATERIAL CUT & ASSEMBLY SHEET
Backcheck Weights for Leveling Keys and Regulating
Key Dip.
Materials needed for 3 oz. and 2 ½
oz. weights for white and black keys:
Cut off tail of grand hammer at shank hole.
(From scrap)
4 1/4" length of metal clothes hanger.

Total Cost for 3 oz. Weight - .57 Cents
Total cost for 1 ½ oz. Weight - .47
Cents
Savings of Make vs. Buy. - .81 Cents per
3 oz. Weight
Fabrication Steps:
1. Cut hammer tail off grand hammer at shank.
2. Drill hole in tail at slight angle for
metal rod.
3. Cut 4 1/4" length clothes hanger.
4. Bend one end of rod slightly to prevent
lead weights from sliding
off rod.
5. Insert two (2) lead weights on rod.
Two 1 ½ oz. weights for 3 oz. weight
for white keys.
One 1 ½ oz. and one 1 oz. weight
1 ½ oz. weight for sharp keys.
6. Insert top end of rod into hammer tail
with about 1/4" of rod
protruding above tail.
7. Lean or hook tail over sample key backcheck
for angle.
8. Push tail down to compress weights on
rod with no slop in length.
9. Place weight in vice to hold while you
apply CA glue to top of tail where rod protrudes. Use medium viscosity
glue then spray activator setting the glue.
10. Turn weight upside down in vice, clamp,
and apply medium viscosity glue to bent-over rod and lead weight.
Spray activator on felt punching, place punching on glue on lead weight.
The felt punching will stabilize the weight while sitting on the wood key.
11. Place weights horizontally centered in
vice, clamp down and apply pressure on combined weights to compress the
width from original 5/8" width down to 3/8"
width. This will secure lead weights
to rod. This width of weights will now hang off front of backcheck with
enough space between weights for clearance and movement of key while leveling
keys or regulating key dip.
12. Cut off excess metal rod above tail hook.
Application
Using only two 3 oz. weights one can work
progressively up the keys, skipping the left weight over the right weight
to the next white key backcheck. When working the sharp keys, place
the 2 ½ oz. weight between the two 3 oz. weights and then move the
weights to the next sharp key and two white keys. |
